Practical advice
Protect yourself from the sun. The water reflects intense light, so pack sunscreen, a hat with a chin strap, and polarized sunglasses. Keep a light jacket handy, as the wind picks up once you leave the dock.
If you plan to operate a boat, note the local laws. Boaters born after July 1, 2007, need a safety certificate for engines over 10 horsepower. Always observe no-wake zones and stay at least 50 feet away from commercial berths.

Planning questions
When is the best time to see dolphins in Charleston?
You can see bottlenose dolphins year-round in Charleston Harbor. They are frequently spotted near the shore, especially around Shem Creek and from The Battery.
Do you need a boating license in South Carolina?
If you were born after July 1, 2007, you need a boating safety education certificate to operate a vessel with 10 horsepower or more. Local rental liveries can issue a temporary 30-day certificate.
Can you swim in Charleston Harbor?
Swimming in the main harbor channels is not recommended. The currents are strong, and there is heavy commercial shipping traffic. Stick to designated local beaches on the barrier islands.
